Asian equity markets closed lower on Thursday, primarily driven by a surge in oil prices above $100 a barrel and a significant rise in bond yields. Investors are now keenly focused on upcoming U.S. inflation data for further clarity on the global economic outlook. Australia’s S&P\/ASX 200 Index led regional declines, marking its third consecutive losing session, as elevated energy costs fueled concerns that inflation could persist longer than anticipated, potentially necessitating further action from central banks.<\/p>\n

Markets<\/h2>\n

The S&P\/ASX 200 Index<\/strong> dropped 92 points, or 1%, to close at 8819.40, with all 11 sectors recording losses. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng index<\/strong> slipped 1.6%, and its TECH sub-index fell more than 2%. Mainland China\u2019s Shanghai Composite<\/strong> edged down 0.4%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225<\/strong> and South Korea’s KOSPI<\/strong> managed to pare some earlier significant losses, Japanese shares were additionally weighed down by a sharply stronger yen.<\/p>\n

In commodities, Brent crude futures<\/strong> edged lower on Thursday but remained above $100 a barrel, trading at $100.35, after reaching $101 earlier in the session. This surge in oil prices follows an escalation in shipping attacks in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Bond markets also saw notable movements. Australian 10-year bond yields<\/strong> climbed to 5.27%, reaching their highest level since 2011 and marking a 15-year peak. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield<\/strong> edged 0.1% lower to 4.831%, although it remained near levels not seen since 2023.<\/p>\n

What Drove Markets<\/h2>\n

The primary catalyst for the widespread decline in Asian equities was the surge in Brent crude prices<\/strong>, which surpassed the psychologically important $100 threshold. This oil rally, triggered by an escalation in Middle East shipping attacks involving Iran and the United States, raises concerns about potential energy supply disruptions. The higher energy costs complicate the outlook for central banks, threatening to keep inflation elevated and potentially putting pressure on economic growth.<\/p>\n

The rising bond yields<\/strong> also played a significant role. Australian 10-year bond yields hit a 15-year peak, prompting Global X ETFs investment strategist Justin Lin to comment that “Oil is smashing the Australian market,” forcing investors to consider that inflation could remain higher for longer, potentially necessitating further action from the Reserve Bank of Australia. In the U.S., sustained elevation in Treasury yields, despite a slight easing, followed a smaller-than-expected $6 billion Treasury buyback of longer-dated debt.
