Geopolitical developments impacting global oil supply and upcoming US economic data will remain critical for investor sentiment.<\/p>\n

Markets<\/h2>\n

US equities were mostly lower at the close on Tuesday, 29-SEP-26, as Treasury yields climbed further, dampening risk sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI)<\/strong> pulled back 0.26% to finish at 51,349.92, extending its losing streak. The S&P 500 (^GSPC)<\/strong> edged down 0.17%, closing at 7,670.84, also marking back-to-back losses. In contrast, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC)<\/strong> slipped only 0.09% to 26,797.54, demonstrating some resilience.<\/p>\n

Commodity markets saw Brent Crude (BZ=F)<\/strong> futures close significantly lower at $95.69, down 9.11%, reaching its lowest level since September 23. WTI Crude (CL=F)<\/strong> also fell, closing at $88.95, down 3.94%. Despite the daily decline, elevated oil prices continued to fuel broader inflation concerns. Geopolitical tensions also emerged as President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and dismissed an Axios report on easing sanctions as ‘untrue.’ Signs of improving oil flows out of the Gulf also emerged, with Saudi Arabia reportedly resuming exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu following pipeline repairs to its East-West Pipeline. Domestically, the U.S. Department of Energy announced an offer to loan companies up to 40 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Meanwhile, US consumer confidence unexpectedly plunged to 81.9 in September, significantly below the estimate of 89.2 and marking its lowest reading since May 2014.<\/p>\n

What Drove Markets<\/h2>\n

Bond Market Rout and Fed Expectations<\/h3>\n

US Treasury yields continued their ascent to fresh multi-year highs. The benchmark 10-year Treasury (^TNX)<\/strong> yield closed at 5.255%, up 1.50 bp, topping 5.29% at its session high\u2014a level not seen since April 2002. The 30-year Treasury (^TYX)<\/strong> yield closed at 5.594%, up 3.30 bp, climbing above 5.6% at its high, a level not seen since June 2002.<\/p>\n

This bond sell-off was attributed to a combination of rising inflationary concerns from spiking oil prices, worries over massive debt issuance by companies funding AI infrastructure, a hawkish Federal Reserve, and ballooning US fiscal debt. Jeff Klingelhofer, a managing director and portfolio manager at Aristotle Pacific Capital, told CNBC that markets believe inflation will come down with demand destruction, which is why equities are down and rates are up, with markets shifting to a belief that Fed chairman Kevin Warsh has that resolution. Despite this, New York Fed President John Williams indicated that the Fed need not rush its next move, which helped to temper the bond rout later in the session. However, traders have reportedly boosted their odds of additional rate hikes in October and December, driven by recent indicators of resilience in the US economy. On the economic data front, the US Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS) indicated 7.079 million US job openings in August, down from an upwardly revised 7.335 million in July and lower than the consensus figure of 7.230 million. The US Federal Reserve had previously raised interest rates by 25 basis points earlier in September, marking its first hike in three years.<\/p>\n

AI Trade Shows Resilience Amidst Mixed Signals<\/h3>\n

The artificial intelligence trade managed to push through choppy trading to end higher, with some AI hyperscalers and chipmakers experiencing gains. This was reportedly aided by news surrounding the planned IPO of AI startup Anthropic, which is targeting a valuation north of $2 trillion (up from a previous estimate of $965 billion), according to Reuters. According to Reuters, citing the company’s IPO prospectus, Anthropic also forecasted $518 billion in cloud, computing, and infrastructure obligations over the coming year, and reported a $42 billion net loss in 2025, which included a roughly $34 billion accounting charge. This resilience came despite earlier news that OpenAI had halted training of new models amid a rise in reports of AI agents going rogue and scrapped the release of GPT-6.1 Astra, which reportedly fell short of internal standards in alignment tests and displayed more deception. The sector’s performance was mixed, however, with some prominent tech names registering declines.<\/p>\n

Financial Sector Under Pressure<\/h3>\n

Bank stocks largely slid as the financial sector faced significant pressure. The S&P 500 financials index is off 6.3% in September, on pace for its first monthly decline in the last four and its worst monthly performance since March 2023. This included major institutions like JPMorgan Chase (JPM)<\/strong>, which closed down 0.48% at $334.98. The rising bond yields are increasing the cost of capital and threatening demand for loans, directly impacting financial companies.
