South Korea and Japan saw notable declines, while Australia’s ASX 200 closed largely flat, buoyed by energy and financials offsetting downturns in tech and mining. Commodity markets presented a mixed picture, with lithium, copper, and aluminium prices falling on demand concerns, while Brent crude traded lower despite earlier geopolitical tensions. European markets opened higher, adding to the day’s divergent global sentiment. Investors are closely monitoring upcoming US bank earnings, Federal Reserve commentary, and critical inflation data later in the week.<\/p>\n

Markets<\/h2>\n

Asian markets closed lower, primarily driven by the global sell-off in chipmakers. South Korea’s KOSPI plunged 5.46% to 6,035.35, reaching its lowest level since July, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.82% to 67,777.52. Mainland China’s CSI 300 also slipped during the session. In contrast, Australia’s S&P\/ASX 200 Index finished broadly flat, up a marginal 0.01% at 8,783.90, as strong gains in energy and financials largely counteracted steep falls in its tech and mining sectors.<\/p>\n

As the European session commenced, shares were broadly higher. Germany’s DAX was up 0.64% at 25,440.24 in morning trading, and the UK’s FTSE 100 led gains among major regional bourses, rising 0.78% to 10,739.83.<\/p>\n

US equity futures presented a mixed picture ahead of a wave of corporate earnings. Nasdaq 100 futures were trading 0.42% lower, reflecting ongoing tech sector jitters, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose in early trading. Commodity markets saw Brent crude trading 1.63% lower at $104.91 at the time of writing. The 10-Year US Treasury yield stood at 5.240%, down 0.40 bp, and the 30-Year US Treasury yield was at 5.598%, down 0.20 bp. The US bond market was closed on Monday due to the Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day holiday.<\/p>\n

What Drove Markets<\/h2>\n

A significant global sell-off in chipmakers and AI-related stocks dominated sentiment. This was sparked by news that Chinese competitor ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) made progress on a higher-density memory-chip design, fueling worries about the AI race. The pressure began overnight with US-listed chipmakers like Micron, which closed 3.88% lower at $989.04. The ripple effect was felt across Asia, heavily impacting South Korea\u2019s SK Hynix, which closed 14.16% lower at 1,443,000.00, and Japan’s SoftBank Group and Tokyo Electron, which closed 8.50% lower at 5,310.00 and 7.15% lower at 11,555.00, respectively. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan remarked that the “AI boom had attracted investors whose strategies resembled gambling,” while billionaire Ray Dalio described AI as a “classic bubble” nearing a potential burst as interest rates rise and investors seek to convert wealth into cash.<\/p>\n

Commodity markets showed divergent performance. Lithium prices tumbled following a nearly 12 per cent fall in Chinese lithium carbonate futures. This was in response to a deal between China and the European Union that capped Chinese hybrid car imports into the EU at 350,000 a year from December, a substantial reduction from the current run rate of about 650,000, weighing on the demand outlook for the battery material. Industrial metals like copper and aluminium also saw prices drop amid concerns about spending on artificial intelligence and their demand outlook. Brent crude was trading lower, although the ASX’s energy sector had rallied earlier as Brent crude stretched towards $US107 following Ukraine casting doubt on an “energy ceasefire” touted by US President Donald Trump, and reports of Saudi Arabia suffering its deadliest strikes since the Iran war began in February.<\/p>\n

Stocks to Watch<\/h2>\n

In Australia, the S&P\/ASX 200 remained flat, but sector performance varied significantly. Major mining stocks BHP and Rio Tinto closed 1.84% lower at $61.28 and 2.40% lower at $161.00, respectively, dragging on the local bourse as copper and aluminium prices declined. Fortescue also fell 2.92% to $15.32. Conversely, the energy sector rallied, with Woodside gaining 1.86% to $32.78. The “big four banks” also saw gains, with ANZ up 1.27% to $38.39, CBA rising 2.32% to $154.50, NAB increasing 1.87% to $39.25, and Westpac climbing 1.53% to $35.16. Qantas slid following the announcement that it would end its domestic codeshare with Air New Zealand, with the partnership set to scale back from April 7, 2027.<\/p>\n

Beyond Australia, key chipmakers like US-listed Micron (down 3.88% to $989.04) and South Korea’s SK Hynix (down 14.16% to 1,443,000.00) were heavily impacted by the tech sell-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
