Market Overview

US markets experienced a broad sell-off following the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision and subsequent hawkish commentary from Chairman Kevin Warsh. The Fed delivered a widely anticipated 25 basis point rate hike, bringing the target range to between 3.75% and 4%, the first increase since July 2023. However, it was Chairman Warsh’s firm stance on persistent inflation risks and the central bank’s updated economic projections that signaled a “higher-for-longer” interest rate environment, unsettling investors. Policymakers now expect inflation to remain above target through most of 2029 and hinted at another rate increase later this year.

In response, US Treasury yields rose, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbing above 5%, and the US Dollar Index strengthened to levels not seen since July 31. Against this backdrop, Australian share futures are pointing to a sharp opening drop for the APAC session. Investors in Asia will also be closely monitoring upcoming New Zealand Q2 GDP data and the Bank of England’s policy decision. Geopolitical tensions continue to influence oil markets, with Brent crude prices easing slightly but remaining above $100 a barrel amid reports of Saudi pipeline repairs.

What Drove Markets

The primary driver of market sentiment was the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy update. The unanimous 25 basis point rate hike, to a target range of 3.75%-4.00%, was overshadowed by Chairman Warsh’s hawkish remarks. He stated, “The plain fact is that inflation is too high, and has been for too long,” adding that “This summer’s inflation readings do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved.” Warsh also pushed back against providing forward guidance.

The Fed’s Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) indicated a median federal funds rate of 4.1% by the end of 2026, implying at least one more rate hike. At least 12 FOMC members now foresee another hike this year, with four penciling in two more. Principal Asset Management’s Seema Shah noted that “The upward revision to the long-run neutral rate reinforces the message that higher-for-longer is no longer just a slogan, but an increasingly likely policy reality.” This hawkish outlook led to a rebound in the US 10-year Treasury yield above 5% and a strengthened US Dollar.

Crude oil prices, while still holding above $100 a barrel, declined on Wednesday amid easing supply disruption jitters. Reports indicated that Saudi Arabia was offering more crude oil loadings to Asian refiners and seeking to restart its East-West Pipeline with half capacity within days. These developments offset earlier concerns arising from Houthi drone attacks on Saudi infrastructure and a reported halt in Libyan production. US diesel prices recently hit $6 per gallon, adding to broader economic pressures.

Stocks to Watch

Credit-sensitive sectors faced pressure following the Fed’s hawkish stance, with fears that higher rates could slow lending growth. Goldman Sachs (GS) closed at $976.67, down 1.19%. JPMorgan Chase (JPM) closed at $352.49, up 0.67%, despite earlier reports of declines in other major banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and American Express.

Shares of J.B. Hunt Transport Services slumped 13.3% after its finance chief forecast a sequential decline of 5% to 10% in current quarter earnings, citing escalating diesel fuel costs.

The broader tech sector also saw scrutiny amidst a growing debate over AI safety. Industry leaders including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief Sam Altman, xAI founder Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis have called for a slowdown in AI development. AI hyperscalers Microsoft (MSFT) closed at $497.12, down 1.64%, and Alphabet (GOOGL) closed at $344.98, down 1.26%.

Intel (INTC) shares closed at $97.14, down 0.05%, despite earlier reports of talks with South Korean memory giant SK Hynix (000660.KS) to build semiconductors in the US. SK Hynix, trading at 1,759,000.00, was up 4.08%. SK Hynix stated that “no plans had yet to be confirmed.”
