Market Overview

European markets are set to open positively, buoyed by rising US equity futures and optimism surrounding the impending third-quarter US earnings season. This upward trend contrasts with a mixed picture across Asian markets, where Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 extended its rally, while South Korea’s KOSPI declined significantly. Elevated global bond yields continue to be a key concern for investors, alongside volatile crude oil prices which saw intraday swings due to evolving geopolitical developments.

Markets

US equity futures tracked higher, with S&P 500 futures (ESZ26) trading up +0.29%, Nasdaq 100 futures (NQZ26) +0.32%, and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures +0.35% (184 points). This provides a positive lead for European indices, with Stoxx 50 futures up +0.65%, German DAX futures +0.58%, France CAC 40 futures +0.51%, and UK FTSE 100 futures +0.32% in pre-market trading.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the S&P/ASX 200 (^AXJO) closed +0.76% at 8,783.20, marking its second consecutive day of gains. However, South Korea’s KOSPI (^KS11) traded down -3.50% at 6,394.34, primarily driven by declines in chip stocks. The Hang Seng Index (^HSI) gained +0.10% to 24,235.87, while the Shanghai Composite (000001.SS) was down 0.37% at 3,799.86. Japan’s markets were actively trading. U.S. bond markets were shut for Columbus Day, with Treasury cash trading suspended for the holiday, although U.S. stock exchanges remained open.

Commodity markets saw Brent Crude (BZ=F) trading down 0.80% at $103.88 a barrel and WTI Crude (CL=F) down -1.26% at $90.69 a barrel. Gold (GC=F) traded marginally lower by 0.08% at $4,213.00, after extending recent gains.

Global bond yields remained a focus for investors. The US 10-Year Treasury yield (^TNX) stood at 5.244%, moving +1.30 bp, reported at its highest level in more than two decades. Australian 10-year yields were near a 15-year peak of 5.43%.

What Drove Markets

Optimism surrounding the impending US third-quarter corporate earnings season is currently boosting investor sentiment, with the S&P 500 projected to see 29.6% earnings growth. This expectation is contributing to the positive outlook for European markets and US equity futures.

Global bond markets remain a significant overhang for equities. US Treasury yields were trading at levels not seen in over two decades, while Australian 10-year yields were near a 15-year peak. Emanuel Datt, chief investment officer at Datt Capital, suggested that the biggest risk for shares is the performance of bond markets, questioning whether the rapid move is temporary or persistent.

Crude oil prices experienced considerable intraday volatility. Brent crude initially surged following renewed strikes on Saudi Arabia’s main airport and a fresh tanker attack near the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of escalating Middle East conflict. However, oil futures reversed course later in the day after US President Trump proposed Russia increase its diesel exports and announced an ‘energy ceasefire’ between Russia and Ukraine, though this agreement remained unconfirmed by either side. Republican and Democratic senators reportedly raised objections to Trump’s proposal for Russia, questioning its legality. Iran has sought talks with Saudi Arabia following Houthi attacks, and Australia raised its travel advisory for Saudi Arabia to “Do Not Travel.”

Copper extended recent gains, supported by easing rate bets and a Chile mine avalanche. A gauge of US investment-grade credit-default swaps climbed to its highest level since the Iran war began. China and the EU reached a 16-point consensus on trade, investment, export controls, and intellectual property, with Beijing agreeing to curb hybrid-car exports as the bloc considers safeguard measures.

Stocks to Watch

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200’s rally was largely driven by its mining and banking sectors. Large-cap miners BHP Group (BHP.AX) closed up +2.45% at 62.43, and Rio Tinto (RIO.AX) gained +1.60% to 164.96. The “big four” lenders also contributed to the gains, with National Australia Bank (NAB.AX) closing +2.26% at 38.53, Westpac (WBC.AX) +2.70% at 34.63, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA.AX) +1.15% at 151.00, and ANZ Group (ANZ.AX) +1.96% at 37.91.

Conversely, Telstra (TLS.AX) shed losses for a second day, closing down -2.52% at 4.65. This follows news of SpaceX’s spectrum deal, which led to declines in US telco stocks and dragged communication services lower. MAAS Group shares fell about 12% after AI data-center operator Firmus scrapped its planned $5 billion initial public offering. Domino’s Pizza axed its local CEO. UBS upgraded HUB24 and Netwealth to “buy.”

South Korea’s KOSPI was hit by declines in chip stocks, with SK Hynix (000660.KS) trading -4.16% at 1,611,000.00 and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) losing -4.58% to 250,000.00. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (2330.TW) slipped 0.39% to 2,540.00 in Taiwan’s market.
