Market Overview

Wall Street closed higher, driven by a robust rebound in AI-related technology and semiconductor stocks. Enthusiasm for the artificial intelligence trade was revived by Anthropic’s public IPO filing, which highlighted significant growth for the AI company, acting as a “confidence booster” for the sector. This positive sentiment, coupled with widespread expectations that the Federal Reserve will hold interest rates steady later in the week, fueled a risk-on mood among investors. Easing oil prices, stemming from diplomatic efforts in the Middle East to de-escalate tensions, further supported the market’s gains. For investors entering the APAC session, this backdrop suggests a cautiously optimistic outlook, with Australian shares anticipated to open higher.

Markets

US equities saw broad gains, with the S&P 500 (^GSPC) climbing 0.70% to 7,676.77. The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) led the advance, rising 0.82% to 26,169.38, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) also contributed to the positive close, gaining 0.28% to 52,361.58. The market’s “fear gauge,” the VIX (^VIX), reflected reduced volatility, dropping 5.45% to 18.39.

US bond yields eased, with the 10-Year Treasury yield (^TNX) closing at 4.986%, down 0.20 basis points, amid expectations for the Federal Reserve to maintain current rates.

In commodity markets, oil prices retreated from six-month highs as diplomatic efforts intensified in the Middle East. Brent Crude (BZ=F) fell 5.62% to 110.16, and WTI Crude (CL=F) dropped 1.92% to 101.29. Gold, a traditional safe-haven asset, saw a marginal gain of 0.53%, closing at 4,029.30. The Australian Dollar (AUDUSD=X) closed at 0.7019, down a slight 0.01%.

Looking to the APAC session, the S&P/ASX 200 (^AXJO) closed its previous session up 0.17% at 8,809.90. S&P/ASX 200 futures were up 0.1% (or 4 points) near 6am AEDT, according to AFR, signaling an anticipated higher open for Australian shares following the positive Wall Street performance.

What Drove Markets

The key drivers behind the positive market sentiment included:

  • AI Resurgence and Tech Rebound: A significant catalyst was Anthropic’s public IPO filing, which provided detailed insights into the company’s substantial growth. Anthropic reported $16.29 billion in revenue for the six months ended June, a 1,304% increase year-over-year. While its net loss widened to $80.7 billion, largely due to convertible bonds, the filing reinvigorated interest in the AI sector. This spurred a robust rally across semiconductor and other AI-related stocks, helping the S&P 500 and Nasdaq recover from recent weekly losses.
  • Federal Reserve Policy Expectations: Markets are largely pricing in a stable interest rate environment, with Fed funds futures trading indicating a 90% likelihood that the Federal Reserve will hold rates steady at its meeting this week. This expectation has offered “a kind of relief” to businesses. However, the broader message from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s post-decision press conference is expected to remain hawkish, with CME’s FedWatch Tool still showing a 73% chance of another rate hike in December.
  • Easing Geopolitical Tensions and Oil Prices: Oil prices retreated from recent six-month highs amid intensifying diplomatic efforts to de-escalate Middle East tensions. Reports of Saudi and Turkish officials in Tehran, alongside Qatari mediation, fueled hopes of reduced regional conflicts and alleviated concerns about potential disruptions to oil production or export facilities.

Stocks to Watch

The resurgence in AI enthusiasm translated into strong gains for several technology and semiconductor firms:

  • The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) rose 2.74%. Individual chipmakers also saw significant increases, including Nvidia (NVDA) (+2.39%), Micron (MU) (+2.98%), Broadcom (AVGO) (+2.33%), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) (+2.80%), and Intel (INTC) (+4.04%).
  • Cloud computing providers like CoreWeave (CRWV) (+1.76%) and data storage companies such as SanDisk (SNDK) (+1.42%), Western Digital (WDC) (+3.63%), and Seagate Technology (STX) (+2.18%) also benefited, reflecting demand for AI infrastructure.
  • Ahead of their earnings reports, Microsoft (MSFT) advanced 1.54%, and Amazon (AMZN) gained 0.44%, with investors assessing their roles in the AI landscape. However, Alphabet (GOOGL) fell 1.06%, and Meta Platforms (META) dropped 1.88%, despite Meta’s plans to raise $95 billion to fund AI investments. Nebius Group (NBIS), a cloud computing provider, declined 3.45%.
  • Separately, Tesla (TSLA) jumped 5.21% following an analyst upgrade from Barclays.
