Market Overview

Asian markets generally saw a rebound in Wednesday’s session, led by a recovery in the semiconductor sector, providing a mixed backdrop for the European open. This came despite a notable sell-off in Australian bank stocks. Underlying global themes included persistently elevated oil prices driven by escalating Middle East tensions and cautious anticipation ahead of crucial US inflation data. Investor sentiment received some relief from a New York Fed official’s signals hinting at potentially only one more rate hike this year, which tempered rate bets and saw US Treasury yields decline.

Markets

Australian Equities
The S&P/ASX 200 Index (^AXJO) closed lower for the second consecutive day, ending at 8,727.90, down 0.64%. This decline was primarily due to a sell-off in its major bank stocks, while the energy sector gained on higher oil prices. Among the ‘big four’ lenders, Commonwealth Bank (CBA.AX) recorded the steepest decline, falling 2.16% to 151.17. Westpac (WBC.AX) finished down 1.34% at 34.69, National Australia Bank (NAB.AX) fell 1.78% to 38.55, and ANZ (ANZ.AX) retreated 0.23% to 38.30. Countering the trend, Telstra (TLS.AX) rebounded 1.29% to 4.70.

Asian Equities
Major Asian indices generally advanced. South Korea’s KOSPI (^KS11) gained 0.86% to 6,087.32, Japan’s Nikkei 225 (^N225) rose 0.63% to 68,203.78, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng (^HSI) advanced 0.31% to 24,421.04. This performance was largely driven by a recovery in semiconductor shares. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) saw an increase of 1.83% to 236,250.00, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) (2330.TW) was up 1.00% at 2,515.00. Meanwhile, Chinese markets showed a mixed performance, with the Shanghai Composite (000001.SS) slipping 0.33% to 3,788.35.

Commodities
Oil prices remained elevated amidst increasing Middle East tensions. International benchmark Brent crude (BZ=F) was up 0.64% at 106.37, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures (CL=F) advanced 0.61% to 94.71.

Currencies
The Australian Dollar (AUDUSD=X) rose marginally against the US Dollar, gaining 0.71% to 0.7005. The US Dollar Index (DX-Y.NYB) eased 0.07% to 102.11 after reaching an 18-month high in the previous session. The Euro (EURUSD=X) was up 0.46% at 1.1212 against the US Dollar.

Bond Yields
US Treasury yields declined following comments from a New York Fed official regarding the future path of interest rates. The 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) fell 2.30 basis points to 5.217%, and the 30-year Treasury yield (^TYX) dropped 3.50 basis points to 5.563%.

US Futures
US stock futures showed modest gains in pre-market trading, as investors awaited the September consumer inflation report.

What Drove Markets

Elevated Oil Prices and Geopolitical Risks
Middle East tensions, specifically Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, are driving concerns over energy supply disruptions and contributing to sustained high oil prices. This presents a significant inflationary pressure. Hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones commented that oil could rally another $20-$25 due to the Iran conflict. These elevated oil prices are impacting consumers, with gasoline averaging $4.34 a gallon compared to $3.08 per gallon a year earlier.

Semiconductor Sector Rebound Amid Volatility
After a heavy chip stock sell-off in previous sessions, Asian semiconductor companies like Samsung Electronics saw gains, while SK Hynix closed flat. The prior sell-off was driven by growing fears of an AI spending bubble and rising anxieties around competition out of China, reflecting concerns that Chinese memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies is narrowing the technology gap. Etoro lead analyst Josh Gilbert observed that despite the S&P 500 and ASX 200 appearing calm at the index level, underlying volatility persisted, particularly for concentrated tech portfolios.

Central Bank Expectations and US Inflation Data
New York Fed President John Williams indicated that the central bank might need only one more rate hike this year, with no further hikes expected in 2027. These remarks softened rate bets, with markets pricing in a 22% chance of an October increase, and led to a decline in US Treasury yields. Markets are now highly focused on the upcoming September US Consumer Price Index report, which is expected to show an acceleration in headline inflation by 3.6% year-on-year, up from 3.4% in the prior reading. Core CPI is forecast to climb 0.2% month-on-month.

Mixed US Bank Earnings and Australian Spillover
Wall Street’s third-quarter earnings season has seen major US banks post mixed results, with shares generally falling despite strong fundamentals. This lukewarm reaction contributed to a significant sell-off in Australia’s major bank stocks. Commonwealth Bank chief executive Matt Comyn noted a demanding environment of slowing growth and worrying inflation, and he expects more frequent and volatile international shocks ahead. Bank of America shares also declined over 2% in extended trading after the firm faced more than $1.2 billion in federal penalties for failing to report over $5 billion in “suspicious” transactions. The market’s reaction to initial Q3 earnings suggested that businesses have a higher bar to clear, especially in tech, where semiconductors are expected to be the largest contributor to year-on-year earnings growth (130% compared to S&P 500 companies’ expected 30%).

Chinese Economic Indicators
Stronger-than-expected Chinese trade figures for September offered some market support, with exports surging 36.3% year-on-year (beating the 25.5% forecast) and imports rising 31% (versus expectations of 24.5%). This highlighted resilient external demand. However, subdued consumer inflation was evident as China’s CPI rose to 0.9% year-on-year (missing the 1% forecast), signaling weak core inflation and an uneven economic recovery within China. Conversely, PPI inflation accelerated to 5% (beating the 4.5% forecast) due to higher energy and commodity costs lifting factory-gate prices. Adding to regional indicators, Singapore’s economy expanded 5.4% year-on-year in the third quarter, slowing from 6.2% in the previous quarter but beating the 5.1% consensus estimate, indicating easing regional momentum. BHP also announced it will sack 300 staff at its WA Pilbara iron ore operations.
